Thailand consistently ranks at the top for cost-of-living value among expat destinations. The trade-off is a visa structure that has historically been fragmented and requires active management.
The LTR Visa (Long-Term Resident, launched 2022) is now the clearest long-term route, offering a 10-year visa for high-earning remote workers (€75K/year income), wealthy retirees, and investors. The Thailand Elite Visa (lifestyle program, 5–20 years) suits those who want stability without income requirements. For shorter stays, the METV (Multiple Entry Tourist Visa) and education visas remain common bridge solutions.
Thailand is best for digital nomads, cost-conscious retirees, and anyone whose income significantly exceeds local living costs. The combination of warm weather, excellent food, strong expat communities, and extremely affordable healthcare makes it a compelling long-term base.
